Feasibility Study of Tokamak, Helical and Laser Reactors as Affordable Fusion Volumetric Neutron Sources

Abstract The applicability of tokamak, helical and laser fusion reactors as a volumetric neutron source has been examined using the systems codes that have utilised for conceptual design DEMO commercial in Japan. This study clarified characteristics reactor-based sources can be designed based on current physics engineering basis with reasonable running cost (∼5B Yen/year). Although achievable flux is 2–3 orders lower than accelerator driven sources, tokamak provide much larger irradiation area test large components. Laser both high operability tritium breeding capacity. These also serve an integrated bed entire reactor system.
